The word Protopia was coined by Kevin Kelly, co-founder of Wired Magazine in 1993. Protopia is a future better than today -- but not perfect. Protopain societies are ones which slowly and steadily improve the quality of life of their inhabitants.

Unlike Utopia which is a mythical perfect world, or Dystopia described as a hellscape on earth caused by human or natural events, a Protopian future is one that gets better and better over time.  Zev was interviewed about Protopian Futures in this overview of the Protopian concept in The New York Times.

This Protopian Futures website offers original adventure thriller novels — the From Here to There books and Silo 42 series — that include within the story line viable solutions already proven on small scales. These practical technologies give us new options to address local food production, water treatment, green building, renewable energy, and healthcare which, when combined, would create a viable framework for a more sustainable world.
